Snooker

Snooker is the most popular billiard game in the UK. The snooker game is played on a baize-covered 12×6 foot table with 6 pockets. The game is played with 15 red balls, 6 un-numbered balls of different colors (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black) and the cue ball. Each ball has a different numeric value and the object of the game is to score more points by potting (the snooker equivalent of the term "pocketing") the reds and the colored alternately.

The snooker game was developed in the end of the 19th century at a British army base in India. The origin of the term "snooker" is from a slang word to recruits, which originally used as an insult to rookie snooker players. On top of referring to the name of the game, the meaning of the term "snookered" is the act of blocking the opponent's desired object ball so it cannot be hit by the cue ball directly.

The snooker game is governed by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association or simply World Snooker. Snooker players' ranking is determined by the WPBSA. The World Snooker Championship, the most important professional tournament in the filed. The annual event is broadcast by the BBC and Eurosport and gains massive popularity in the UK and the commonwealth nations.
